What is a UTM parameter?

A UTM parameter is a tag you add to the end of a link so analytics and attribution tools know where a click came from. When someone clicks a tagged link, the parameters travel with them to your site, and your reporting can group the visit by source, medium, and campaign instead of lumping it under "direct" or "unknown".

There are five standard UTM parameters:

utm_source names the origin, like google or newsletter. utm_medium is the channel type, like cpc or email. utm_campaign is the specific campaign. utm_term holds a paid keyword, and utm_content distinguishes two links that point to the same page.

Why consistency matters

UTMs are case-sensitive and free-form, so Facebook, facebook, and FB become three different sources in your reports. Pick a convention, lowercase everything, use underscores instead of spaces, and stick to it. Messy UTMs are one of the most common reasons attribution reports do not add up.

UTMs tag the click. Trakt closes the loop.

A UTM tells your analytics where a visit started. It cannot tell Google or Meta which clicks became sales, and it disappears the moment a shopper clears cookies or switches devices. Trakt captures the click first-party and reports the resulting conversion back to the ad platform server-side, so the campaign you tagged gets credit for the revenue it drove, not just the visit.
